During the 18th and 19th Century, The Term King's Shilling was used to described an earnest payment of 1 shilling given to new recruits of the British Army and the Royal Navy. The idea of the King's shilling being at the bottom of a Pewter Tankard came when recruiters used to attempt to trick potential volunteers into recruitment by placing it there. Thus when finishing their pint they discover they have accepted the shilling and are involuntarily recruited. An ideal gift for a male on any occasion.
